Oil on canvas painting by Silas Martin is a portrait of Josephine Klippart. It shows her in a white lace dress. Hand-written on the back is "Portrait of Josephine Klippart (an artist) of Columbus, O., / from life by her friend / Silas Martin / 1876 Professor in Ohio State University." On the back, there is a patch on the right side. There is also a tag stapled to the lower left corner that reads "F-61 / Josephine Klippart / Silas Martin." Handwritten in the right corner of the tag is "1-B."

Silas Martin (1841-1906) was born and raised in Westerville, Ohio, a small community north of Columbus. He studied with noted portrait painter John H. Witt, who is remembered for the numerous Ohio governors' portraits he painted. Martin served as head of the art department at The Ohio State University from 1898 until 1906.
